The instances of people becoming overweight or obese are on the rise. The reality is that the human race is getting fatter. This has serious implications for the future health of people, for the economy and the cost of medical care and health insurance. If you are overweight or obese your chances of dying prematurely increases. Being overweight or obese also puts restrictions on your life and mobility.
There can be many reasons that are causing this increase in weight and obesity in many people today. The causes can be heredity were certain people are born with higher levels of cholesterol or fat cells in the body which makes them more prone to putting on weight. Some people's metabolism rates are lower which means they are less efficient at burning calories. Certain people have under-active thyroid glands that also make you more at risk to putting the weight on. Although, theses genetic conditions are beyond our direct control there are medications available that can treat them.
The main reason why people are putting on more weight than any other time is a combination of over-eating and taking less and less exercise. Many people today are living sedentary lifestyles that involve little to no physical exercise. Technology has done away with most of the physically demanding jobs. Most people now work in offices where they sit behind a desk for long periods of time without moving.
People are also eating more and the type of food they are eating is not healthy food. Mass production processed foods are cheap and convenient. But most of it is high in fat, salt, additives and chemicals. Processed foods provide little to no nutritional value or do not provide the essential nutrients the body needs to promote health.
These two factors of lack of exercising and overeating are the main causes of why people are getting fatter. The repercussions of their actions will be felt as they get older not only personally but by everyone as the cost of treating the many chronic diseases that are caused by obesity.
